見事な雲が浮かんでいた。写真に撮ってみたけれど、うまく撮れない。
雲は難しい被写体だと考えを改めて、カメラの設定を変えながら何枚も撮った。そうしているうちに、雲の明るさが難しさの原因だと思った。具体的には
- 雲が思った以上に明るくて露出合わせが難しい。
- 雲の明暗差が少なくて、雲のグラデーションの再現が難しい。
- 雲の暗い部分が、灰色に写りがちで、記憶色と異なる
空を撮る際には、iso 400, 1/1000sec, f8が鉄板の設定とよく言われるが、これだと雲を撮るには明る過ぎて、雲の明るい部分の諧調が出ない。白飛びするわけではないけれど、微妙な明暗差が写らない。だからと言って暗く撮ると、雲の暗部が汚く写る。
微妙なカメラ設定と、順光で撮れる時間帯である偶然とが必要なのだと思う。

There was a beautiful cloud floating in the sky. I tried to take a picture of it, but I could not get it right.
I changed my mind about clouds being a difficult subject and took many pictures while changing the settings of my camera. As I did so, I realized that the brightness of the cloud was the cause of the difficulty. Specifically
- Clouds were brighter than I expected, making it difficult to adjust the exposure.
- Clouds have not contrast enough, making it difficult to reproduce cloud gradations.
- Dark areas of clouds tend to appear gray, which is different from my memory color.
It is often said that iso 400, 1/1000 sec, f8 is the best setting for photographing the sky, but this is too bright for clouds and does not produce the gradation in the bright areas of the clouds. This is not to say that there are no splashes of white, but subtle differences in light and dark cannot be captured. However, if you take a darker image, the dark areas of the clouds will appear dirty.
I think it is necessary to have subtle camera settings and coincidence of the time of day when it is possible to take pictures in good light.
